Q. Demonstrate how this might or might not apply in either the life of Algernon Charles Swinburne or the death of Walt Disney.

A. Is this your take home final for philosophy? His mania for masochism, particularly flagellation, probably began at Eton and was encouraged by his later friendships with Richard Monckton Milnes (one of Tennyson's fellow Apostles), who introduced him to the works of the Marquis de Sade, and Richard Burton, the Victorian explorer and adventurer. Some gamey stories survive from the year or so that he spent living at 16 Cheyne Walk with Rossetti: according to one, Rossetti once had to tell him to keep down the noise--he and a boyfriend had been sliding naked down the bannisters and disturbing Rossetti's painting. In another, Rossetti gave to Adah Menken, the American circus rider, to introduce Swinburne to heterosexual love. She returned it… [cont.]

A. In my judgment Swinburne is at times a great poet. Even the line you cite as a failure--misspelling "than," by the way--(why?) seems to me interesting. Its trailing off into soft, sibilant "s" sounds imitates the sweep and fall of snow. Perhaps Swinburne has moments of mechanicality and meretriciousness like Poe, but at his best--as in, say, "The Garden of Proserpine"--he creates an atmosphere as thick and palpable as any poet, and he is rhythmically authoritative. His mood of decadence and dissolution may not be the cheeriest to read, but in poetry the subject is only the premise for the language, and there Swinburne can be spectacular.
