Brain-derived neurotrophic factor, also known as BDNF, is a secreted protein that, in humans, is encoded by the BDNF gene. BDNF is a member of the "neurotrophin" family of growth factors, which are related to the canonical "Nerve Growth Factor", NGF. Neurotrophic factors are found in the brain and the periphery. Contents

From Google Video Search: "bdnf" Aren't you exercising regularly to beat Alzheimer's, breast cancer and ADHD??? Q. Recent research shows that exercise does more than build muscles and prevent high cholesterol and heart disease. It also helps to build up the body's levels of BDNF(brain-derived neurotrophic factor) which is critical for learning, memory and other processes of higher thought. So what kinds of exercises do you do??? Wish you great health! UPDATE ***Do you think we are too engrossed with TV, computer stuff, >9hr working days, reading sensational magazines, parties, etc and so have little time left for physical exercises, the moment we leave school??? I walk the dog, jog, cycle, swim, surf and play hockey! Answered by liz - Tue Jan 29 04:33:27 2008 Could increasing BDNF levels prevent autism in childhood?
Q. Autism is defined as a neurodevelopmental disorder in which the brain fails to cement fundamental neural circuits that connect regions of the cortex, precipitating cognitive impairments that impede a patient's ability to function in the context of daily life. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has been implicated in stimulating the development of these synaptic tracks during early infancy preceding the conclusion of the critical period of a child's cognitive growth at age eight. In addition, deficient BDNF expression has been experimentally correlated with improper formation of cortical brain regions that house higher-order mental faculties. Thus, with those who possess a genetic propensity towards autistic spectrum disorders, could… [cont.] Asked by - Sun Oct 16 01:08:49 2011 - Biology - 1 Answers - Comments A. Well, I don't know much about the molecular mechanism of Autism, but I think it's unclear if BDNF alone would be enough to supplant missing neuronal connections.I read somewhere (okay, it was wikipedia) that autism may be from too many neural connections causing over-activity (perhaps due to not enough pruning?). It seems like a variety of neuropathologies could lead to autism, but BDNF may treat some of them--I would be interested to know if there are any labs looking into this. Really all I know is that that conditional BDNF knockout mice then end up as obese, aggressive, and stupid-- mice autism? Maybe.
