Can you put brass polish on a brass trumpet and not ruin it?
Q. I have a Holton T602R Brass trumpet it is not as shiny as i would like it and i was wondering if putting some kind of polish or finnish would work. If so what kind and what would i do to put it on.

A. A good detergent and water cleaning will do a lot to brighten your lacquer. There are any number of lacquer polishes made for lacquered brass instruments--you can try one of them. I use a high quality clear coat auto finish protector--if you choose to do the same do so at your own risk. If there are sections where the lacquer is missing a good cleaning and quick buff with a soft cloth can do wonders. The main thing is to not remove any of the existing lacquer---it's tough to completely remove and looks really ugly if it's half lacquered and half raw brass. What you don't want to use is a chemical or abrasive "brass polish". A good cleaning and buff with a soft cloth will do wonders.

How do I polish silver and brass?
Q. I have heard of a method that uses a common household substance, but I don't remember what it was. Can you help me?
Asked by Ryan B - Thu Jan 3 22:09:50 2008 - Cleaning & Laundry - 2 Answers - Comments
A. Common white vinegar and baking soda work VERY well to remove tarnish from silver, brass, and copper. Use a soft cloth or sponge soaked in the vinegar and use the baking soda as a rubbing compound. I have also tried plain table salt with vinegar, but it doesn't work as well. If you have some paste wax (like you'd put on your car) to buff the brass or silver after cleaning, the clean metal won't oxidize as fast and will remain shiny longer. However, don't do this with items which will be used for food, like table silverware.

what is the best thing to use to polish brass and getting out tarnish?
Q. I used a brass cleaner but the tarnish came back
Asked by Ted - Sat Sep 20 00:32:18 2008 - Cleaning & Laundry - 6 Answers - Comments
A. The brass tarnishes because of contact with oxygen. If you cut out the contact it will not retarnish. You can put what you polished in a tight bag or spray it with a clear plastic coat from the hardware store. If spraying, polish then wipe with soapy water to remove grease from the hands etc first. How do I polish dirty brass door fixtures?
Q. Under layers of dirt/oxidation I discovered that the knocker, handle and letter slot on my front door were solid brass. I've used Twinkle and steel wool and they look amazingly better but the surface still has a copper hue to it. Any suggestions on how to get it to that shiny brass look - and keep it? Thanks.
Asked by jimmie_k - Tue Jun 16 12:58:36 2009 - Do It Yourself (DIY) - 5 Answers - Comments
A. Other than power buffing Brasso as mentioned is fine but will reqiure some work. after a hot soap & water scrub. The "copper " color might be due to oxidation reacting w/ cleaning chemicals that have strong acid or base PH. Could also be that some pieces are brass plated base metal & the copper underplating is showing where the brass plating has been worn off. Easy enough to find out by scraping the back of the piece , If grey or silvery looking metal shows ...it aint brass. Once cleaned auto polishing compound is good for upkeep since the compound is wax based. Marine supply stores have metal cleaners & protectants that hold up better than brass polish alone. Best regards

Is it possible to Remove Spilt Brass Polish from Stonework?
Q. As a Verger in our Church, we were doing weekly cleaning which involved doing the Brass and Wall plates. We use the wadding type Brasso metal polish and some of the wadding touched the wall, it's left a Greenish smear on the wall! Is it possible to Remove the Smear. The Stone is not painted so can't touch it up with fresh paint. Is there any ways to remove the spilt polish?? Thanks!
Asked by Bill - Fri Nov 20 21:42:43 2009 - Decorating & Remodeling - 1 Answers - Comments
A. Tough question. Have you exhausted all other possibilities such as warm soapy water? If so, try calling the manufactuer if no one else here could produce a good solution for you. I've included the link to the MSDS sheet under sources. If the stone is totally unfinished, would sandpaper work to remove that thin layer? If you plan on trying this tactic, please test it in an inconspicuous location first to see the reaction sandpaper has on stone. Good luck!!!

Transfer the mixture to a glass jar, close it tightly and label it. To use the cleaner, shake a small amount onto a cloth and rub it into the surface of the brass, or object. Use a toothbrush for hard-to-reach areas. Rinse with water and rub dry with a clean cloth. A 'secret' to cleaning and polishing brass is to use a weak acid with a p H somewhere in the area of 3 to 4. A. If the piece is not too big, put it in plastic or ceramic container and soak it overnight in brasso. Steel wool will add scratches that are very hard to remove. For a brilliant shine, use nothing more severe than an old cotton tee shirt. Big pieces can be soaked in acetic acid if some can be found.
