How prevalent is cohabitation in your culture? ?
Q. Cohabitation may now be the most typical path to marriage, but there are differences in education, religion, employment, and place of residence between cohabitors and noncohabitors. How prevalent is cohabitation in your culture?

A. I live in Illinois USA, I am 46, married and Catholic. Cohabitation is becoming increasingly more common here. Years ago, it was taboo and gave a woman a terrible reputation, and her children a bad name. Many couples who did not live together "had to get married" (societal and family pressure) because they "got caught" (unplanned, unwed pregnancy) With divorce ending around 50% of the marriages here, many couples are now choosing to cohabitate, because as well as being emotionally damaging to the individuals, divorce is financially devastating, often costing thousands of dollars and sometimes up to two years of time. There is not so much pressure from society to marry as there was years ago. The church is maintaining… [cont.]

Would redefining marriage to include nonmating relationships encourage cohabitation among mating couples?
Q. Thought experiment: Suppose we redefined "high school diploma" to mean a document available to anyone with "equivalent life experiences." Anyone who claimed equivalent life experiences could appear at the local school board, sign an affidavit, and receive a diploma. Would that change in definition influence the study habits and attendance of present high school students, exerting an influence on the drop-out rate? It seems to me that those who argue that redefining marriage would have no affect on actual marriage would have to argue that redefining a high school diploma would have no affect on study habits, attendance, or the dropout rate. Where am I going wrong?

A. Obviously, your example of the redefinition of a diploma would change the study habits of high school, and the validity of the document as well. Sort of like a doctor claiming that his life experience would qualify him for a medical degree. Rather silly. By the same circumstance, the institution of marriage would be affected likewise. Not only would it change, but it would be devalued as well. Sadly, this is the direction we have taken, and will achieve, as more and more states opt to support it, and the liberal view that spawned it. Keep in mind also, that the institution of marriage was a device God created, and by that action, only He qualifies as the party with the ability to change it.
