Dogwood

The genus Cornus is a group of about 30-60 species of woody plants in the family Cornaceae, commonly known as dogwoods. Most dogwoods are deciduous trees or shrubs, but a few species are nearly herbaceous perennial subshrubs, and a few of the woody species are evergreen. Several species have small heads of inconspicuous flowers surrounded by an involucre of large, typically white petal-like bracts, while others have more open clusters of petal-bearing flowers. The various species of dogwood are native throughout much of temperate and boreal Eurasia and North America, with China and Japan and the southeastern United States particularly rich in native species.

The dogwoods include the common dogwood (Cornus sanguinea) of Eurasia, the widely cultivated flowering dogwood (Cornus florida) of eastern North America, the Pacific dogwood (Cornus nuttallii) of western North America, the Kousa Dogwood (Cornus kousa) of eastern Asia, and two low-growing boreal species, the Canadian and Eurasian dwarf cornels (or bunchberries), Cornus canadensis and Cornus suecica, respectively.

Depending on botanical interpretation, the dogwoods are variously divided into one to nine genera or subgenera; a broadly inclusive genus Cornus is accepted here, with four subgenera.

what are maple and dogwood trees called?
Q. A conifer tree is, for an example a pine tree, that maintains its leaves all year around. But, what are maple and dogwood trees called? These are the opposite of conifer trees, as their leaves change color, fall off, and leave the plant looking bare and some what dead.

A. They are called deciduous, which is not the opposite of conifer but the opposite of evergreen. Deciduous shed their leaves every year and go dormant for the winter. Conifer means cone bearing trees which are usually evergreen

how do you propagate dogwood cuttings?
Q. I have a dogwood bush that is growing into a messy shape. I need to trim it and I was wondering if I can root the peices that I am going to cut off. If anyone knows how to do this, it would be apprecated. The peices will be at least 6 inches long and it doesn't matter if it takes a long time to root.

A. Hardwood propagation from cuttings: willow, poplar, dogwood This is the commercial method of propagating hardwood from cuttings. In the coldest part of winter, take cuttings at least the thickness of a thumb. Cut to about 5" lengths. Place upside down in a pail filled with sand. Fill with water to the top of the sand. Keep in cool place, but frost-free. In spring, you will find little knobs on the sticks where roots will set. That's the right time to set each one right side up in a pot of soil. Water. This works for willow, poplar, dogwood, and other hardwoods which produce their own rooting hormones. You can test for suitability of a species by placing a twig in water. If roots form by themselves, the species can be used. If you have… [cont.]
