Existentialism

Existentialism was foreshadowed by 19th century philosophers Søren Kierkegaard and Friedrich Nietzsche. In the 20th century, the German philosopher Martin Heidegger (starting from Husserl's phenomenology) influenced other existentialist philosophers such as Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir and (absurdist) Albert Camus. Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Franz Kafka also described existentialist themes in their literary works. Although there are some common tendencies among "existentialist" thinkers, there are major differences and disagreements among them (for example, the divide between atheist existentialists like Sartre and theistic existentialists like Martin Buber and Paul Tillich); not all of them accept the validity of the term as applied to their own work.

Noun

existentialism (plural existentialisms)

  1. (philosophy, not countable) A twentieth-century philosophical movement emphasizing the uniqueness of each human existence in freely making its self-defining choices, with foundations in the thought of Søren Kierkegaard (1813-55) and Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) and notably represented in the works of Karl Jaspers (1883-1969), Gabriel Marcel (1887-1973), Martin Heidegger (1889-1976), and Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-80).
The heyday of existentialism occurred in the mid-twentieth century.
  2. (philosophy, countable) The philosophical views of a particular thinker associated with the existentialist movement.
Sartre's existentialism is atheistic, but the existentialism of Marcel is distinctly Christian.

what are the key differences between existentialism and post modernist philosophy?
Q. Cause it seems to me that it is along similar lines, ie, there is no real meaning, and post modern from what i understand is that it's choice, there is no truth, only individual truth, but then that sounds similar to existentialism, even though not all existentialists agree, same as post modernists i assume?

A. There are some who straddle both camps. For instance, Nietzsche and Heidegger. But the main difference is that pm's are not committed to a belief in free will whereas from what I know existentialists are.

How can existentialism be described as 'non empirical'?
Q. Surely it's all about making life choices based on empirical experience? Don't flame me for this as I'm asking a serious question and would like it proved to me that existentialism has no roots in empirical data. Thanks Brandon, but isn't the choice based on empirical evidence?

A. Determines the worth of knowledge not in relation to truth but according to its biological value contained in the pure data of consciousness when unaffected by emotions, volitions, and social prejudices. Both the source and the elements of knowledge are sensations as they "exist" in our consciousness. There is no difference between the external and internal world, as there is no natural phenomenon which could not be examined psychologically , it all has its "existence" in states of the mind. See Kierkegaard, Heidegger, Jaspers. This excellent explanation does not explain the means by which evidence of empirical existence gets into the "pure data of consciousness." How does one remove "emotions, volitions,… [cont.]
