What is the best flea and tick medicine for cats and kittens?

A. Frontline spot-on. It treats fleas and ticks and can be used on cats from 8 weeks of age. Get the Combo/Plus version if possible (from a vet) as this is the most complete treatment available as it also kills flea eggs and larvae and so helps break the flea lifecycle. Do not use ANY flea or worm treatments from pet stores (except Frontline which has recently become licensed to be sold in stores) - there are some very dangerous flea products available in pet stores and all of them, I can guarantee you, are useless. Pop in to a vets - if the cats have worms, they have tapeworm too. Kittens should be wormed at least monthly until 6 months of age. Chalice

How do you get rid of fleas and how long flea bites last?
Q. I have 2 outdoor cats, and they have been outside during the daytime and come in during the night. But both cats we have notice have been itching then I saw they had fleas. Now I have flea bites all over my feet, arms, legs, and back. How do I get rid of these fleas and how long do flea bites last?

A. you may itch for a few days. sounds like you've got a pretty bad infestation and you might have to bug bomb your house but here's a few things worth trying first and just good as common practice. soak your cats' collars in oil of pennyroyal. this will drive the fleas away. repeat every two weeks. hanging bunches of the herb where the cats sleep and spend the most time is also a good idea. a pillow of camomile flowers also drive the fleas away. try putting aloe on your flea bites -pennyroyal also drives away mosquitoes good luck take it easy

How can I tell the difference between a human flea and a cat flea?
Q. My cat has fleas which I keep treating but they bite me too .I am beggining to worry about whether they are cat fleas , human fleas or both.I have treat him with Tablets and monthly drops and flea sprayed human bedding and carpets. Can I tell by looking whether they are human or cat fleas?
Asked by judylu - Tue Nov 11 18:49:23 2008 - Zoology - 15 Answers - Comments

A. You can, by looking at them under a microscope. However if your cat has fleas, these are the fleas that are biting you. You need to treat the cat with a proper veterinary flea treatment, stuff bought from the supermarkets won't work. To get rid of the fleas in your house you need something like Acclaim - again, supermarkets don't sell anything that's likely to be effective. You need to treat the cat. Then vacuum your house thoroughly, everywhere the cat has been, as often as you can. After one of the vacuumings, spray the proper flea killer everywhere. You will also need to wash anything that can be washed. If the house isn't treated properly, the fleas will just return to your cat. Send me a message if you need any more info.

Is there a monthly flea treatment for ferrets like there is for dogs and cats?
Q. I use "Revolution" to keep fleas, ticks, and misquitos off of my two cats and dog. Every now and then though, I find a little demon on a pet. My ferrets however, have no treatment on them. They are all itchy. I can't see fleas but I know they are getting bitten by em every now and then since of course, unavoidable, there are a few in my house. Is there a monthly flea treatment for ferrets as well?

A. You can use revolution or advantage on ferrets, but call your vet to find out what he recommends for them and what dosage to give them. I have a tiny little girl, and a big, bumblebutt boy and I have to measure out the boys dosage in a syringe, but I can just count drops on my girl.

How can I control the flea problem I have without using more chemicals?
Q. I have a 14 week Basset Hound and have already applied the Frontline flea control but it is not working. The poor thing is still covered in fleas. I am afraid to apply any more chemicals. Does any one have any natural or organic remedies I can try to use on the dog and to treat her play yard? I live in east Texas and I guess that the heat and humidity are a perfect breeding ground for fleas and mosquitoes...Help.

A. Fleas hate cedar. If you can afford a cedar fence or can trust her not to eat cedar chips I would put one up/sprinkle some down. The frontline should definitely be working but it doesn't really repel fleas- it kills them after they bite her so your yard may be the thing infested and the poor girl just can't keep them off her. You're probably going to have to treat your yard with chemicals but at least it's not your pup. Definitely do not put any more chemicals on your dog until the frontline has expired. Good luck!

How to I get rid of a Flea Infestation on a dog cheaply?
Q. My parents are in TN and when I went to visit I noticed the dog they keep outside is covered in fleas. He has very little hair left and the fleas are VERY visable and gourged. He seems to be getting thin as well because of it... anemic? They have very little money. Are there any home remedies that can be used? They give him weekly flea baths but it does not help, since he is outside.

A. It sounds as if you need to do something fast if you want to save this dog's life if he is getting thin and is losing hair. First, you need to get some Dawn dishwashing detergent and wash the animal well. Let the soap mixture stand on his skin for 10 minutes. By doing this, you break down the oils in the fleas and suffocate them. Second, before you let him back out in the yard, you need to treat his area. Get some Sevin Dust from Walmart or Lowes and get to putting it out. If you can, let the dog stay inside while the area is being treated. Let him/her have a break from the itching. Third thing you need to do, is treat your house. If he has been inside for any amount of time, you better Sevin Dust the door jams and get a house fogger. If… [cont.]

What is the best flea medication to give to dogs and or cats?
Q. This summer has been hell for my animals. We've used flea dips, dawn, regular shampoo, swimming, and frontline. My poor dog and kitties still have fleas. They have also infested our guest room. How the heck do I get rid of them for good?

A. Frontline is the best medication, but now you also need to flea bomb the house- you can't treat your pets whilst you have fleas in the house, because that's redundent.

How to treat a house after a flea infestation?
Q. My cat has fleas and he is currently on a flea treatment for it. We've been told that we need to treat the house as well as our cat to kill all the eggs and any remaining fleas. How do we go about doing this? Do we just buy a special spray and spray it on everything? How long before we let the cat back? Advice from anyone with personal experience on this would be greatly appreciated!!!
Asked by - Mon Sep 5 08:19:14 2011 - Cats - 5 Answers - Comments

A. I use Frontline on the animals then I get flea spray that can be used on pets and bedding. I wash the pet and people bedding in hot water and then use the spray on and around the pets sleeping areas. Regular vacuuming helps too! Give the cat brewers yeast to repel fleas. Once you have killed the fleas inside, Bay or Laurel leaves are a non toxic flea repellent. Just scatter them in your entryways, on carpets and pet beds and let them sit for a few hours. Sweep up the leaves then vacuum. If you have a severe flea issue, you might consider planting Bay or Laurel trees in your yard. Hope this helps!

Does Head & Shoulders kill the flea eggs too? How oftern can you wash a kitten with it?
Q. I washed my flea kittens in Head & Shoulders. When I let the soap sit on them for 5 minutes, it killed the fleas. I would like to know if it kills the eggs too and how often I should wash them in it. They are only 7 weeks (too little for Advantage, etc.) Thanks for all the responses tho.
Asked by novicegal92 - Sat Aug 11 08:50:58 2007 - Cats - 14 Answers - Comments

A. I don't usually use human shampoo on cats as cats tend to be so sensitive to so many things, and I don't know what products are safe to use on my cats. I doubt that Head & Shoulders kills flea eggs, as most flea products do NOT. You can read the product label. If it can kill the eggs, it WILL state that as this is a rare attribute and an excellent selling point for the product that can kill the fleas in the eggs as well. What you did is drown the fleas. The soap prevents their escape, and they drown. Letting the kit sit with all that soap for 5 min was a great plan. NOW... Get a flea comb and comb the kitten thoroughly to comb those flea eggs out now. Do not repeat the shampoo. Anything that can kill fleas can be hard on the body if… [cont.]

When can I start using flea stuff on my puppy?
Q. My puppy is around 9-10 weeks and she has fleas near her ears. I gave her a bath with the medicated flea shampoo for puppies 6 weeks and over but I was wondering when I can start using Advantage/Frontline on her since that will be more effective. Also, which is better? Frontline or Advantage?

A. Both are excellent products and can be used on a 9 week old pup. Whichever one you buy, be sure to get the right dose for your pup's current weight. I personally use Frontline Plus on my dogs and Advantage on my cat. No particular reason. Both are good.

What is the best natural flea repellent for cats?
Q. I've been looking into flea repellents for my cat and after doing research, I decided I'd like to try to go with something natural as to not have chemicals in my cat's body. I've seen a few suggestions, but I've also seen that they can be harmful to cats (for example, tea tree oil). Does anyone know of a natural flea repellent that works and isn't harmful to cats? Thanks. Jenny, I looked up garlic and it said it is harmful to cats, lowers their red blood cell count, and can cause them to become anemic.
Asked by Karina - Fri Sep 23 16:51:31 2011 - Cats - 3 Answers - Comments

A. "Natural" is not the same as "safe" when it comes to cats. Tea tree oil is toxic to cats, and yes, garlic is as well. Cats do not metabolize things the same way that dogs and humans do, and many of these natural products are quite toxic to them. Things like pyrmethrins and essential oils are some examples. Your best bet really is to go with one of the better products like Advantage, Frontline, or Revolution. The are much safer than those 'natural' but toxic products. They are really insect growth regulators, rather than pesticides, and yes while they are still chemicals they are not the same kinds of chemicals that are really detrimental to mammals. you do need to weigh the good with the bad with all treatments - while… [cont.]

What is the best flea control and tick treatment for dogs?
Q. What is the best flea control and tick treatment for dogs? We are having a hard time getting rid of fleas, we are doing flea baths and drops BUT still cant get rid of the pesky critters. We are using frontline. Ive heard of a tablet/capsule that works as a repellent, can anybody shed light on this. What the compound is generic brands etc. Also we are spraying the outside area too but perhaps the product we are using isn't strong enough. Can anybody suggest the best and most economical way to rid the problem? Thanks in advance.

A. Switch to Advantage for awhile. Sometimes the fleas build up a resistance to one of the major flea medications and you need to switch for awhile. You can switch back to Frontline Plus after awhile.

How do you kill fleas that are resistant to flea spray, collars, drops and powder?
Q. After using the sprays, collars, drops, powders, and washing them with shampoo the fleas show back up within a week. Yes we have washed everything that can be washed in hot water, have used different sprays on the furniture and rugs, vacuumed and washed floors yet we still end up with fleas. Our pets do not go outside. We have put the fleas in a glass of flea spray and all they do is paddle around and eventually they drown but are not killed by the sprays. Is there a product that works to kill the fleas and the eggs?

How much does a flea dip usually cost for a kitten?
Q. I recently adopted a kitten from my friend who couldn't take care of her anymore, and she came infested with fleas. I gave her a flea bath, and combed her with a flea comb, but if the problem persists, how much am I going to be spending on a vet visit for a flea dip/bath? I gave her some over-the-counter flea medicine (the kind you drop on her back and it gets absorbed through the skin). Any help appreciated. Thank you.
Asked by Sam M - Fri Aug 10 21:23:02 2007 - Cats - 7 Answers - Comments

A. You have to make sure that you used one that is safe for kittens. Generally, you shouldn't "flea" dip a kitten. They are too young. And there are only certain flea shampoos that are safe for kittens. To be honest with you, this is what my vet told me to do, bath the kitten in Johnson's Baby Shampoo. Yes, that's all. But when you wet her, make sure you cover her ears real good because the fleas will try to go to her ears. Make sure you lather her up really good, then rinse her...that should be good enough. Depending how long you have had her, if you'll have to treat your house. If she came with any blankets or towels, make sure you wash them. 1 flea lays 10 eggs, and 10 fleas come from 1 egg. That is how it is so easy to get so… [cont.]
