Greek Words for Love

There are several Greek words for love, as the Greek language distinguishes how the word is used. Ancient Greek has four distinct words for love: agápe, éros, philía, and storgē. However, as with other languages, it has been historically difficult to separate the meanings of these words. Nonetheless, the senses in which these words were generally used are given below.

  • Agápe (ἀγάπη agápē) means "love" (unconditional love) in modern day Greek, such as in the term s'agapo (Σ'αγαπώ), which means "I love you". In Ancient Greek, it often refers to a general affection or deeper sense of "true love" rather than the attraction suggested by "eros". Agape is used in the biblical passage known as the "love chapter", 1 Corinthians 13, and is described there and throughout the New Testament as sacrificial love. Agape is also used in ancient texts to denote feelings for one's children and the feelings for a spouse, and it was also used to refer to a love feast. It can also be described as the feeling of being content or holding one in high regard. Agape was appropriated by Christians for use to express the unconditional love of God.
  • Éros (ἔρως érōs) is passionate love, with sensual desire and longing. The Modern Greek word "erotas" means "intimate love;" however, eros does not have to be sexual in nature. Eros can be interpreted as a love for someone whom you love more than the philia, love of friendship. It can also apply to dating relationships as well as marriage. Plato refined his own definition: Although eros is initially felt for a person, with contemplation it becomes an appreciation of the beauty within that person, or even becomes appreciation of beauty itself. Plato does not talk of physical attraction as a necessary part of love, hence the use of the word platonic to mean, "without physical attraction." In the Symposium, the most famous ancient work on the subject, Plato has the middle-aged Athenian philosopher, Socrates argue to aristocratic intellectuals and a young male acolyte in sexual pursuit of him, that eros helps the soul recall knowledge of beauty, and contributes to an understanding of spiritual truth, the ideal "Form" of youthful beauty that leads us humans to feel erotic desire -- thus suggesting that even that sensually-based love aspires to the non-corporeal, spiritual plane of existence; that is, finding its truth, just like finding any truth, leads to transcendence. Lovers and philosophers are all inspired to seek truth through the means of eros."
  • Philia (φιλία philía) means friendship or affectionate love in modern Greek. It is a dispassionate virtuous love, a concept developed by Aristotle. It includes loyalty to friends, family, and community, and requires virtue, equality and familiarity. In ancient texts, philos denoted a general type of love, used for love between family, between friends, a desire or enjoyment of an activity, as well as between lovers.
  • Storge (στοργή storgē) means "affection" in ancient and modern Greek. It is natural affection, like that felt by parents for offspring. Rarely used in ancient works, and then almost exclusively as a descriptor of relationships within the family. It is also known to express mere acceptance or putting up with situations, as in "loving" the tyrant.

What is the Greek word for Cupid, God of Love?
Q. What is the Greek word for Cupid, God of Love?
Asked by Wal-Mart stole my *SOUL* - Sat Dec 12 23:01:13 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The Greeks had several different types of emotional relationships we translate as "love". The most commonly known was "Eros", the god of sexual love and beauty, and is the closest equivalent to Cupid (or perhaps, more correctly, I should say that Cupid was the Roman knock-off version of Eros). This is the root of the word "erotic", and as such relates to the carnal aspects of physical love. But they also had "agape", which is translated as "affection" rather than lust. Then there is "philia", translated as "friendship". And finally "storge", which is the affection felt by parents for their children.

What is a different word for love?
Q. Ok, I know that in English there isn't a word better or stronger then Love... so what about another language? like I know Greek has Agape and Phileo, unconditional love and brotherly love (respectively). But my fiance and I want a word that will be kinda like a secret between us, something that means love like agape, so it's stronger then the english word for love. But in a language that isn't super common, so other people won't know it. Any suggestions?

A. Grok. It is from the book "Stranger in a Strange Land." A classic of Sci Fi, though kind of dated now. It can mean Completely Understand, Love (Agape, Phileo, and Eros), Become One With, and more. It is a basis of a new religion of unity that a human, raised by Martians, introduces to Earth. "I Grok you." would make no sense to most people (especially under 20 years old), but would be appreciated by the few who Grok it. Do you Grok?

One package of whole chamomile flowers. We fill 3"x5" bags which comes out to 1/2 ounce (enough for many spells). Magickal Properties Money, Sleep, Meditation, Love, Purification, Protection, Pain, Discomfort Known for having a scent that many people find to be similar to that of apples, Chamomile actually gets its name from the Greek words kamai, which means on the ground, and melon, which is the word for an apple. When trod upon, it frequently produces a strong, pleasant aroma that wafts around those who step upon it. For this purpose it was often put to use in the medieval periods for use in green garden paths, so that as one strolled from one place to another one would be accompanied by a lovely, sweet smell. In the past, herbalists and gardeners also saw Chamomile as a healing plant that would help those plants it grew next to flourish when otherwise they might begin to fail. For spiritual uses, Chamomile was also frequently used in finding good luck with marriage proposals, gambling, prosperity and good fortune, and was even thought to aid in preventing lightning strikes. Wash your hands in a chamomile infusion before gambling. Use in incense for meditation and to help you fall asleep. Purifying and protecting. Sprinkle around your property to remove spells and curses cast against you. Chamomile is perhaps most famous as a component in tea that is not only smells lovely and is pleasantly flavorful, but is widely known for helping to soothe stomachs and ease indigestion. It is also well known for being a soothing sedative that aids with pain and discomfort. Larger quantities are available, contact us for details.
