John Wesley ( / ˈ w ɛ s l ɪ /; 28 June [O.S. 17 June] 1703 – 2 March 1791) was a Church of England cleric and Christian theologian. Wesley is largely credited, along with his brother Charles Wesley, as founding the Methodist movement which began when he took to open-air preaching in a similar manner to George Whitefield. In contrast to George Whitefield's Calvinism, Wesley embraced the Arminian doctrines that were dominant in the 18th-century Church of England. Methodism in both forms was a highly successful evangelical movement in the United Kingdom, which encouraged people to experience Jesus Christ personally. Wesley's teachings, known as Wesleyanism, provided the seeds for both the modern Methodist movement, the Holiness movement, Pentecostalism, the Charismatic Movement, and Neo-charismatic churches, which encompass numerous denominations across the world. In addition, he refined Arminianism with a strong evangelical emphasis on the Reformed doctrine of justification by faith. From Wikipedia under the

Asked by I I - Sat Aug 22 21:04:47 2009 - - 12 Answers - Comments A. Charles Spurgeon was one of the greatest preachers of the last century. He was truly a man of faith. "With no formal theological training, British Baptist preacher Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834 - 1892) became the most popular minister of the nineteenth century, regularly attracting crowds of 6,000 each Sunday to his London - based Metropolitan Tabernacle church. In the history of Christianity, no other cleric is more widely read - after Biblical ones - than Spurgeon. He has more material available to readers than any other Christian author, dead or alive"** John Wesley was the founder of the United Methodist Church. Q. well i have a class assignment thing but can't find much of anything on John Wesley please help Asked by Charlie Eeles - Thu Nov 11 16:10:11 2010 - - 2 Answers - Comments A. That was William Wilberforce not Wesley. Though he was an abolitionist. Wesley was adamantly against slavery. Your best bet is to find his sermon on slavery. Also just found this on Wikipedia. Wesley was a keen abolitionist. He spoke out and wrote against the slave trade. He published a pamphlet on slavery titled, "Thoughts Upon Slavery," (1774). To quote from one of his tracts against the slave trade: "Liberty is the right of every human creature, as soon as he breathes the vital air; and no human law can deprive him of that right which he derives from the law of nature.A30A". Wesley was a friend of John Newton and William Wilberforce who were also influential in the abolition of slavery in Britain.
