What leather work boot conditioner or protector is best?
Q. I have 2 pairs of Timberland Pro bit boss in gaucho oiled full grain leather. I am looking to protect them the best i can. By keeping the leather conditioned as well as help provide some water resistance. I have found Mink oil, Bees wax, and Timberland's Boot sauce. What type of product do you feel is the best for keeping the boots in pristine condition? Thank you!

A. Obenauf's! Not sure how you say it but we get it in a gallon at work. It is fantastic. Guys will have the same boots on for 4 years and except the leather being warn off the steel toes they look absolutly fantastic. I use them on my hunting boots as well. I wear redwings which tend to be water tight anyhow but they say it is the stuff! Link below to Obenauf's

How do you know if leather is created properly according to animal cruilty laws?
Q. I have no money to go buy a pleather skirt, so my mom passed down her leather skirt to me. I don't wear real leather or fur and can't bring myself to wear leather without reasearching it further. Ps. Not all leather is made from dead stock, some branches, such as a recent indian leather branch, skin the animals alive.

A. There's really no way to tell. The species of animal it was collected from can offer some clues. Tortoiseshell is now entirely plastic. The real material was collected from hawk billed sea turtles. Boiling water was poured over the shell, the skin blistered and the scales were torn off. The turtle was then thrown back overboard and supposedly grew another set of scales. Beaver was often caught in an underwater snare. The beaver drowned when it could no longer get to the surface of the water to breathe. Muskrats were also trapped this way. Mink and fox are now ranched and most likely humanely killed. Few people wear the fur of actual big cats like snow leopards because these are endangered species, and possessing the pelt is probably… [cont.]

How do you stretch leather on a leather headrest?
Q. I have a convertible and the leather wrapping on the rear headrests have shrunken a little bit, exposing the white plastic beneath. They were like this when I bought the car and it looks terrible (it's got to be from the over exposure to direct sunlight along with the owner not treating the leather). What is the best way to stretch them back so they cover the headrest? I am thinking some sort of pliers after I "treat" the leather or something but I have no idea. I am about to sell the car and want to do it myself. Thanks for any help/ideas.

A. Use heat... like a heat gun, or a blow dryer... this softens the leather up enough to make it more "workable". - Good Luck!

What should I do to seal the black leather insert on an antique oak dining chair?
Q. I have an antique oak T back dining chair with a padded black leather insert in the seat. The leather is definitely worn and the padding is flattened, but it's not in terrible condition. The problem is that the black color of the leather keeps coming off, thus making the seat unusable (unless you want a black backside). Is there any way I can seal the leather so that I can sit on it again?

A. There are fabric sealers and dyes you can purchase at fabric stores. The dye along with polish should solve your problem . Otherwise if its worn too bad last resource would be to reupholster

Can stretches in the leather covering of a couch be simply removed?
Q. We are looking a buying a leather lounge suite cheaply. One piece has had something heavy stacked on it during transport. The arm rests have stretch depressions in the leather and probably the under-foam. It would be a good buy if we could be assured we could remove these indentations once purchased. Can it be done easily please?
Asked by Bruce W - Fri Jul 4 01:37:20 2008 - Cleaning & Laundry - 2 Answers - Comments
A. Not easily no. Once the leather has stretched like this especiallly from a heavy object it is very hard to get it to go back so the panel of leather would need replacing which will mean having a panel of leather coloured to match the existing leather as the original is unlikely to be available. This panel and the foams will then need to be replaced by an upholsterer which will not be cheap.

What's a good cleaner and conditioner for a leather jacket?
Q. I would like to clean and condition my leather jacket (which is black lambskin). It has no stains or anything, but it could still use a cleaning. I have some leather cleaner wipes and some leather conditioner wipes that I used for my leather couch, but both the cleaner wipes and conditioner wipes say they aren't recommended to be used for glove or jacket type leather. Can anyone recommend a good cleaner/conditioner combination?
Asked by Minnesota_Slinger - Mon Oct 22 23:55:12 2007 - Fashion & Accessories - 2 Answers - Comments
A. Please, please do not use saddle soap you will ruin your jacket. Lambskin will be very absorbent and will need specialist cleaning, take it to your dry cleaners and ask them to do it. Anything wet will probably mark it. You can use a nubusk cloth to remove surface dirt and you could protect with something like waterstop but do not use wet cleaners.

How can I stop the annoying noises from my new leather recliner?
Q. I just got a rather expensize home theater recliner. Unfortunately, it's all leather and electric. So, when it reclines the leather rubs together making that noise. It will go away if I use some thick leather moisturizer, but come back in a few days after the leather dries. What could I use to "lube" the leather without damaging it?

What is a good product to make my leather look newer?
Q. I brought these floor model chairs for a big discount, and I noticed when I got home that the leather seats looked kind of dry. A. You need to use a good quality water based foam leather cleaner. do not use anything containing oils, waxes or silicones. (Most 'conditioners' contain waxes or oils) and furniture polish contains silicones baby wipes are the worst thing you can use as they will destroy the finish on your leather. They are very strong alkiline cleaners to neutralise urine (acid) on babys skin so they are not the right thing to use on leather. Saddle soap is too harsh to use on todays furniture. A lot of leather wipes contain chemicals which will also destroy the finish or leave residues on the leather which will damage it. What is the difference between artificial leather and synthetic leather?
Q. I study leather designing and i had got a project on synthetic leather. When i searched for synthetic leather on the internet i found the results for artificial leather. A. artificial means it is made out of some natural product (but not hide). e.g. calico (cotton) with linseed oil. synthetic means the material itself does not occur in nature, e.g. plastic.

How does the leather looking microfiber hold up?
Q. I've been looking at leather recliners but with cats and lots of boys in my house I'm nervous. Today I found a microfiber that looks like leather (it uses varing shades of color to make it look like old leather) and I'm wondering if anyone has it in their home and how it's held up? My sister had a traditional microfiber couch and she hated it. It showed every mark even after she cleaned it.

A. I think you might be disappointed. It will show cat claw marks, scratches easily, is difficult to spot clean (cleaners leave water marks) and will take on a shine from heavy fibered garments sliding on to the furniture (like demin). If you wear dark colored denim and have the light colored microfiber it will not only shine but take on a blue tinge over time. But, if distressed leather looks don't bother you, none of that will matter.

How can I clean my leather furniture?
Q. I have 2 kids and they have almost ruined my leather furniture! I have tried the cleaner from the furniture store but it didn't help. Is there something else I can try or do I need to have it professionally cleaned? Does anyone know approximately how much it costs to have a leather sofa and loveseat professionally cleaned? I've only had it for 2 years and it was expensive so I don't want to replace it. It's not the shiny kind of leather, it is the softer kind.
