How to clean/erase pen marks from leather sofa?
Q. My little son have written/drawn all over my new ivory leather sofa by blue ball pen. Do anybody know how to remove/erase these pen marks? Please Help!

A. I treated clothes stained with ballpoint pen using clothes detergent. Not sure if that's safe for leather, but I think it would get the stain out.

A. A quick search found this site with multiple answers and a picture. I would add side chairs in a large animal print, stripe or solid color of your choice and toss colorful pillows or a soft chenille throw in coordinating colors on the sofa.

A. Go to your auto parts store and buy premoistened leather seat wipes for autos. They work good and moisten the leather without getting on clothes.

Can I use automobile leather protection products on my leather sofa?
Q. I bought a leather sofa, and now want to clean and protect it. The car care kits seem to be more economical than buying something from a furniture store. Do products made for automobile leather work for furniture leather? Is there a difference between the two upholsteries that prevent the products from being interchangable?
Asked by Shelley O - Sat Jan 5 13:17:39 2008 - Maintenance & Repairs - 2 Answers - Comments

A. Leather cleaners/protectants are good for leather! The auto industry products contain more "UV" protection for obvious reasons, and in smaller quantities, for smaller seats. I have used these products on my leather easy chair for a long time, and the only downside I have found, is it makes my chair a little 'slicker' than the fur nature store products.

What is a good asking price for a black leather sofa at a garage sale?
Q. I am having a garage sale in the Dallas, TX area and I am stumped as to what to ask for a black leather sofa (exterior leather in good condition). Please help!
Asked by SFL - Wed Apr 30 08:09:40 2008 - Decorating & Remodeling - 4 Answers - Comments

A. Well depending on the condition you could probably ask up to $200. at a garage sale. If it's extra large and perfect condition I would put it on Craigs list instead. You could ask and get more from Craigs list.

How do I remove permanent marker from a leather sofa without ruining it ?
Q. My son wrote on the leather sofa with a black sharpie. I have tried everything I know that wouldn't destroy the leather. Does anyone know how to clean this ?
Asked by glams - Wed Oct 18 11:31:52 2006 - Cleaning & Laundry - 15 Answers - Comments

A. Unfortunately you will have re-dyed the leather and so there is nothing on the DIY basis that will remove this. It will need a solvent to remove the marker and this will also remove the finish and pigment from your sofa (if it is a pigmented suite) which will then need replacing. This is best left to the experts. Call a trained leather technician to do the work. If it is an aniline style leather then the mark will be permanent and only time will help as it will dissipate and blend in slowly.

Can you have Expresso Brown Dining furniture next to black leather sofa's?
Q. Hi Having a real problem at the moment as we want to buy a new dining set which is Oak and has the High back leather chairs but can't find any anywhere in black as all the sets in the shops the chairs are expresso brown which is quite dark. My problem is my house has a lounge diner and my Sofa's are Black leather. Would the Expresso brown leather clash with the black leather? Thanks for your help!
Asked by madasads - Mon Jan 7 15:45:57 2008 - Decorating & Remodeling - 3 Answers - Comments

A. It's a wonderful contrast. The mistake would be trying to match the leathers instead of having the dining set compliment the sofa and give more depth and tone to the room.

Do I need to break-in my new leather sofa for it to be comfortable?
Q. I have had my new leather sofa for a week now and it is very painful on my butt. It is the firm style as opposed to the plush, soft type. My butt hurts after only 15 minutes or so. I have heard varying opinions so far about leather sofa cushion break in periods - some say it is necessary, some say it shouldn't be. Anyone with experience on this?
Asked by Yellowfrog F - Sun Dec 30 00:10:09 2007 - Decorating & Remodeling - 2 Answers - Comments

A. hmmm... is the design modern & ridgid? are the cushions very square or is it oversized & pillowtopped? if its modern, youre sol, if not, you can replace the cushion foam with a down- feather cushion, usually it has a foam surround to hold the shape. you may try a chennille blanket or ultrasuede (microfiber) quilted throw. i have a big fake fur throw on my leather couch, so cozy & looks real.

A. You really do need to look after your leather correctly to keep it in good condition. Using household products and 'old wives' remedies are very short sighted when it comes to cleaning and caring for leather and can become very costly in the long run as problems they generally cause will be costly to put right. (although it does keep people like ourselves busy as we rush round fixing problems caused by using the wrong things!!!) You need to use a good quality water based foam leather cleaner. (LTT Leather Shampoo) With light coloured leather dye transfer from clothing can be a problem although using a good quality leather protector (LTT Leather Protect) will help inhibit this. For dye transfer and ingrained dirt you may need a much… [cont.]

How to remove penmarks on a leather sofa safely?
Q. My 2 year old son decided to write on our leather sofa. Any safe way to remove the penmarks?
Asked by Regs - Thu Jan 24 18:08:49 2008 - Cleaning & Laundry - 5 Answers - Comments

A. This will depend on what type of leather you have. If the ink is on a pigmented leather then the first thing you should try is an ink stick (find one that is a professional product used in the industry - LTT do one). The fresher the ink the more chance you have of removing it. Be sure to check the type of leather you have before doing this as if you use this on an aniline style it will not work and may leave a greasy mark which will not go away. If an ink stick doesn't work a solvent based remover will need to be used and it may also remove finish and pigment so is best left to the experts. Using hairspray/WD40 and all these other solvent cleaners is very risky as it can make the matter far worse as it can spread the ink over a bigger area… [cont.]

How do you clean a color transfer off of a leather sofa?
Q. I recently purchased a cream colored leather sofa. Unfortunately, a maroon colored comforter was left on it and now some of the maroon color has transferred to the leather. I'm thinking that it's ruined but maybe there's a way to minimze the appearance of the stain.
Asked by jay_bmore - Thu Jun 15 14:08:17 2006 - Cleaning & Laundry - 1 Answers - Comments

A. Unfortunately, the comforter has dyed your leather. A lot of the dyes they are using in India, Pakistan and Asia will run if you don't set the color with vinegar the first time you wash the item. That being said, try using a color run remover made for the washing machine. Rit and Mostenbokers both make one which fabric stores and discounters carry. Spray it on a terry towel and work it into the maroon area. You might also try a product called Wine Away sold at kitchen shops and Cost Plus. It removes red based stains from fabrics, but I don't know if it will work on leather.

A. General sofa cleaning For general leather sofa cleaning, use a moisturizing soap, such as Dove. Lather the soap on a soft cloth and wash the sofa to remove dirt and grime. Be careful not to over-wet the leather, and do not rinse after washing. Buffing with a soft cloth allows the moisturizing soap to condition the leather. Polish as usual. A. Let me start by saying that I am a designer and I used to sell furniture. There are lots of different kinds of leather. "Corrected" leather is a very uniform color, it doesn't show and imperfections. It has been dyed and has a coating on the surface. This is the kind of leather that is used for car interiors. It is hard wearing and doesn't scratch easily, any spills can be wiped off. Then there is "pull-up" leather, it is treated with a waxy substance. This is the kind that scratches when you run your fingernail over it. You are just displacing the wax, it will come back if you rub the area with your hand. These leathers tend to look a little more rustic and can absorb spills. They will show "field marks", bug… [cont.]
